About Us

Mission

Different Folks was created with the understanding that underrepresented groups have their own unique cultures and identities, and having spaces dedicated to those differences can be special for both the vendors and the community.

Different Folks is about creating safe spaces and opportunities for those  often left out of the conversation.  We are a queer and disability led organization with the aim of highlighting particular communities within our city by providing the opportunity for their culture to be the dominant force in the room, and welcome everyone to celebrate it with us! Be it through supporting local creators, artists and crafters, hanging out at a social event or whipping something up at our Queer and Allies Crafternoons, Different Folks welcomes everyone to join the fun.

Kayti Baur

(she/they)

My name is Kayti and I'm the founder of Different Folks! I do the vast majority of the planning, communication, and coordination of Different Folks events. If you message Different Folks, I'm who you'll be talking to!

I was inspired to start this organization as a pansexual person with a disability because I understand how having spaces meant for your communities can have a huge impact on mental health.  I started as a market vendor after significant health challenges meant being unable to work a standard job, and I  was looking for a way to engage with the community and make a bit of money while I figured out what to do next.  That is why we focus so much on trying to be accessible and approachable for every vendor, and we offer a lot of flexibility with payment plans and pay what you can table options: I have been a vendor, and I've used markets as a method of supporting myself, and I know how challenging it can be with many markets.

On a personal note I'm a NSCAD, MSVU and Dal alum (really went on a post secondary kick there), studied everything from textiles to epidemiology and am really into color coding things.

I have experience working for non profits, with people with intellectual differences, as a graphic designer, an equity officer, event coordinator, in politics, as an epidemiologist and of course as an artist! Making stuff is my happy place.

Patricia Brochu

(she/her)

Trish plays a big role in our craft nights and helps with social events. She's been on board since our very first event and things wouldn't be the same without her! Here's what she had to say:

I’m Trish (she/her)!

I participate in markets as The Knotty Plant Shop and help run craft nights. I met Kayti at a time when I was craving connection and creativity. Being part of Different Folks has been equal parts fulfilling and fun. I love meeting likeminded folks, crafting with them and learning from them. Different Folks has created a safe space and representation where there was a need - I couldn’t be more proud of the work we do!

Can’t wait to see what’s coming for us in 2024

Normandie Elias

(Norm, she/they)

Norm is our resident flyer goblin and market helper!  She is currently apprenticing to do body modifications, silversmithing and running her business, Norm's Niche!

Heres what she had to say:

Hi! My name is Norm and my pronouns are she/they! Many of you know me from my jewelry shop Norm’s Niche! I am 24 year old and Lebanese-Canadian born and raised in Dartmouth! I am proudly queer and identify as pansexual!

I started working with different folks because the entire premise behind the creation of DF really resonates with me! I feel it is very important for underrepresented groups to have their own space to thrive, grow in, and most importantly feel safe!

Charles Andrews

(he/him)

Charles is a general helper in all things markets - from setting up tables to signage and covering bathroom breaks he helps everything run smoothly!

Stephen D'eon

(he/him)

Stephen is our stand by ASL translator should any vendors or participants need it! Although Stephen is not a formally trained translator, he is the hearing child of two deaf parents and can help with all your vending or shopping needs.  Stephen 's services are offered free of charge for vendors.  If you would like support as a shopper or participant free services can also be arranged.
